On Friday night I went with a few pals to see The Great Gatsby in 3D, and BOY did I enjoy it. I was obsessed with the book beforehand and the film made my love for Fitzgerald's story grow even deeper.
This adaptation was classy, modern and felt genuine from start to finish. Sometimes retro productions can look a little too try-hard, but everything in the film felt perfectly placed, from the characters to the costumes to the cars.
And so, rather than bore you by professing my love for the film in words, here's why Baz Luhrman's Gatsby is actually a very good film, through the medium of gifs. Enjoy.
Everyone said it was all flashy and dancey, with little depth.
Yes, there were lots of elaborate parties, glitter and champagne, but shit got deep, regularly.
And for those who said that it wasn't close enough to the book, could it get much more literal than this?
“The windows were ajar and gleaming white against the fresh grass outside that seemed to grow a little way into the house. A breeze blew through the room, blew curtains in at one end and out the other like pale flags, twisting them up toward the frosted wedding-cake of the ceiling, and then rippled over the wine-coloured rug, making a shadow on it as wind does on the sea.” - F. Scott Fitzgerald
Suck on that bitches.
Moving on... Carey Mulligan was unexpectedly brilliant. Perfect casting for Daisy. Flawless accent, flawless angsty facial expressions.
And then there was Leo.
Leo.
Oh Leo.
Together, they played a brilliant and convincing couple, both equally beautiful and equally selfish.
And of course, Gatsby says "old sport" a lot, finally bringing to life those two words in an American/European accent we could never quite imagine in the book. Thanks Leo!
And the scenery was just brilliant, all perfectly envisioned in true Luhrman style.
That's Gatsby's mansion btw.
AND DA GREEN LIGHT. Didn't forget that one did they?
Overall, it was spectacular. Opulent. Exciting. Tragic. Sad. Intense. Hilarious. And of course, great. Great great great.
